Update on health outbreaks in Tigray: health professionals in besieged region call for an urgent help

UMD Media previously reported on worrisome outbreaks in Tigray where communication within the region and to the outside world continue to be broken.
Here is what we know so far based on information received from health professionals on the ground in Tigray:
1. Malaria outbreak: in 10 Districts (locally known Woredas) in Tigray. Last week alone more than 2000 cases were reported. Though the time right now is not a major transmission season, the outbreak is attributed to the fact that no public health intervention measures against malaria were done for one solid year that followed the start of the war, and the weak intervention activities of last year. More than 77% of the malaria cases are the deadly variant, scientifically known as P. falciparum. One patient with severe malaria died at Ayder Hospital. The patient went to the Hospital with Acute Renal Failure, Thrombocytopenia and all other severe manifestations. Doctors are fearing given there are very little to none diagnostic and therapeutic supplies. No bed nets or chemicals for spraying.

Supports for tuberculosis (TB), HIV and Malaria prevention and control programs including supplies to Ethiopia come from the Global Fund, a worldwide movement established in 2002.
”Th government of Ethiopia has deprived Tigray of those supplies.”, a medical professional in Tigray told UMD Media.

2. Anthrax: Deaths of cattles, and other animals are reported with more than 44 of them in the past few months. Following the outbreak in animals, human anthrax cases were also confirmed clinically. Most of the cases are affecting the skin while some are of the gastrointestinal anthrax type with a few deaths were reported.
Tigray didn’t have any animal vaccination against Anthrax for more than a year.
With the very limited communication means including on foot, people are being given instructions related to food and sick animals; support on how to get rid of the carcass of dead animals or how they should handle sick animals. There is no vaccine nor drugs for animals.

3. Rabies: there are some suspected cases happening in some places. No post-exposure vaccine. In the pre-war period, Tigray had an old vaccine type. “Even that is now a luxury. There is none.”, a source told UMD Media.

4. Diarrheal illnesses:
A medical doctor in Tigray said “Although there is no confirmed cases of Cholera yet but the risks are there. The number of people with dysentery and other watery diarrhea is steadily increasing. We were hoping to get the Oral Cholera Vaccine from WHO or other global agencies.”

Doctors are also witnessing cutaneous leishmaniasis, a skin infection transmitted by the bite of a sand fly under a condition real difficulty getting any anti-leishmaniasis drugs.

Tigray has been under siege and communication blockade since June last year. Doctors there are desperately calling for the international community for malaria supplies such as bed nets, diagnostic test supplies, and medications.
A medical director in Tigray describing the situation there now and in the near future said,
“That is the most worrisome now. The next worrisome thing is cholera. If it happens.”
”The meager resources we have are far far far from adequate. No transportation, no telephone etc. How can one intervene to control such outbreaks?”

This Thursday, February 24, 2022, Humanity witnessed live on all television channels the brutal aggression of Ukraine by the armies of Russian imperialism leaded by Putin. They witness, dazed, the bombardments and the unleashing of the war.

This sad spectacle, the people of Tigray know it too well: it has been part of their daily life for more than 1 year and half now, since Ethiopian imperialism launched its offensive by invading Tigray.

This does not mean that the government of Tigray is beyond reproach or a model of respect for human rights and democracy. But it must be recognized that it is the same imperialist logic that is implemented by Ethiopia as Russia. However, in the Horn of Africa, the horrors of war can continue because they take place in the almost general indifference of international public opinion.

Ethiopia to wage its dirty war enjoys the support of a number of countries that provide military aid. For instance Turkey, a member of NATO, sold Bayraktar TB-2 military drones to the Ethiopian government. The drone’s motors are made in Ukraine, in Kiev. The government of Ukraine – despite being under the threat of an imperialism – did not hesitate to send mercenary-technicians to teach the imperialist Ethiopian army how to use the military drones against Tigray population.

However, we know that those who cause wars are not those who die from. We do not confuse the population with the government. It is us, the workers, the students, the farmers, the people who live in simple cottages who are always the victims of the wars started by the elites, the governments and the bourgeoisie, who are always well sheltered in their palaces.

Also, even though the Ukrainian government sold to the Ethiopian one, weapons which are used to increase the genocide in Tigray, we must oppose with all our might the imperialist aggression of the Russian government against the people in Ukraine.

Just as we stand in solidarity with those in Russia who say « no to war » and refuse to obey imperialist delirium.

From Tigray to Ukraine, no to war, no to imperialism! International solidarity! Welcoming refugees!

As the Russian and Ukrainian anti-militarists say: Peace to the cottages, war to the palaces!

Colombia, Ethiopia … there is blood in my coffee

Amidst general indifference, a genocide is underway in Tigray (a current province in Ethiopia), perpetrated by the Ethiopian army and its allies of the miliias and the Erythrean army … the UN has declared that already 350,000 people are in a state of famine as a result of the conflict, and soon 2 million people could in turn be victims. Numerous reports from human rights organizations mention atrocities committed by the armies, in particular the widespread use of rape.

In Colombia, the military police (ESMAD) and death squads massacre the population which revolts against poverty and corruption … Since the begining of the revolt, on april 28th, more than 70 people (june 2021) have been killed by the police, and 2300 have been injured. Human rights organizations reported hundreds of case of violence, kidnapping, sexual assault and rape from police and alikes against demonstrators.

By purchasing coffee from Colombia or Ethiopia (even from so-called « small producers »), you finance these two States which massacre the populations which demand more freedom and more social justice.

We must dismantle the Colombian or Ethiopian states’ ability to wage this war. One way is to cut into one of the state’s biggest source of direct funding and foreign currency revenue : coffee. The importing corporation regularly engages in direct negotiations with the State, whose direct control of trademark licensing and access to markets puts millions into the government’s coffers. Those in solidarity around the world must take action to cut off this flow while the massacres continues.

Don’t be fooled by the rationale about « small producers », which would be different from the big corporates. To export coffee from Colombia or from Ethiopia, exporters need capital, ressources and links with the State’s institution, to which only big producers have access to. The traditional coffee growers dont have the ressources to export. this is true in all regions of the world, and especially in Ethiopia and Colombia All exports of coffee from both those countries benefit to local bourgeoisie, which is hidding behind the masks of « small producers », and the income in foreign currency that export generates is transformed by the State into purchases of weapons used agaisnt the people.

WHAT CAN I DO ?

Individually, I can stop buying coffee from Colombia or Ethiopia.

I can stay informed about the situation in those regions, even if mainstream medias dont talk much about it. There are plenty of independant media ressources on the internet.

I can relay information to my family, neighboors, friends and colleagues by talking, printing leaflet, spreading news on the social networks, ..

I can print and put stickers on the coffee bags in shops and supermarket, calling not to buy coffee from Colombia and Ethiopia.

I can start or join solidarity groups with oter people that are willing to participate to the campaign.

Collectively,, with few friends, we can initiate solidarity groups, to inform and agitate amongst the people by flyering, banner drops, … about the situation in Tigray and Colombia, to raise awareness and call to solidarity.

We can hold pickets in front of coffee shop, especially the global brands who are amongst the biggest purcasers of coffee, in order to raise awareness maongst their consumers. We can ask the workers of those coffee shop – who are often young exploited with bad working conditions – to join us in this battle against global explotation.

By exposing the genocidal policies in Colombia and Ethiopia, we can contribute to curb the level of violence. But it is only a grass root movement, from the people themselves in the concerned region, that will have the capacity to stop the State’s violence by overthrowing it and replace it by a self-managed society based on freedom and egality. And this is true in any country.

Every step, even small, is a positive contribution into the global solidarity march against totalitarism and toward freedom. Let’s join us !

To the Defense, Police, Special Forces, Militia Members and others Armed forces,

The issue is not about traveling. Don’t go !

Our leaders make us live in oppression and poverty. They stay safe in a comfortable place away from the battlefield.

Don’t go to war, don’t risk your life.

Think about your children, your wives and your family.

In any war, no matter whom against whom, it is the ordinary people who are dying.

But the family and children of the leaders are not in any danger, they are benefiting from the war.

If the government wants a war, let the leaders themselves go to war.

Please drop your weapons and refuse to give your life to the leaders.

best regards,

Social Media Activists
